How to decode a VIN
A VIN looks like a random jumble until you know that each position has a job. Once you can see the sections, you can read a car's origin, key specs, model year, and factory straight off the number. Here's the 17-character map.
Decoding a VIN is a matter of knowing which characters mean what. The 17-character string is divided into defined sections, each answering a different question about the vehicle. You don’t need to memorize manufacturer codes to get value from this — just knowing the map lets you sanity-check a listing and spot obvious inconsistencies. Here is what each position does.
Positions 1–3: World Manufacturer Identifier
The first three characters make up the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. Together they tell you the country where the vehicle was built, the manufacturer, and often the vehicle type or manufacturing division. The first character alone indicates the region of origin. This is why you can often tell at a glance whether a car was built in North America, Europe, or Asia just from the start of its VIN.
Positions 4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section
The next five characters are the Vehicle Descriptor Section, or VDS. This is where the manufacturer encodes the vehicle’s attributes: model line, body style, engine type, transmission, and restraint (safety) system, among others. The exact meaning of each character in this section is defined by the manufacturer, which is why decoders rely on manufacturer data to translate them. For a buyer, this section is what confirms that the engine and body type in a listing match what the car actually left the factory with.
Position 9: Check digit
The ninth character is the check digit, and it’s cleverer than it looks. It’s not information about the car — it’s a mathematical verification of the whole VIN. Each of the other characters is assigned a numeric value and a positional weight; those are multiplied and summed, and the result is reduced by a fixed formula to a single value from 0 to 9, or the letter X for a value of ten. If someone mistypes or tampers with a VIN, the check digit usually stops matching, which is how a small error or an alteration gets caught.
Why the check digit is useful
Position 10: Model year
The tenth character encodes the model year, using a rotating code of letters and numbers. Letters are used for many years (with I, O, Q, U, Z and a few others skipped), and numerals for others, and the cycle repeats over time. Because it repeats, the model-year character is read together with the rest of the VIN to place the car in the correct era. For a buyer, this is one of the most useful single characters: it lets you confirm the advertised model year is real.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The eleventh character identifies the specific factory where the vehicle was assembled. Each manufacturer assigns its own plant codes. This is rarely decisive for a buyer, but it’s part of what makes the VIN a precise record of a car’s origin.
Positions 12–17: Production sequence number
The final six characters are the production sequence number — essentially the vehicle’s serial number as it came down the assembly line. This is the part that makes each VIN unique among otherwise identical vehicles. Together with the earlier sections, it ensures no two cars share a number.
